In The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, the magical portal that carries the four Pevensie children from our world into the enchanted land of Narnia is the titular wardrobe. In Prince Caspian, the honor falls instead to a subway station, and the shift conveys neatly the difference between the film adaptations of the two novels. The first, drawing on a metaphor for the psyche, was intimate and mysterious, yet a bit narrow and threadbare. The second, by contrast, offers a sleek but occasionally impersonal ride from point A to point B, with plenty of dramatic stops along the way. In technical terms, Prince Caspian is an improvement on its predecessor in almost every sense. Yet, like the book on which it is based, it lacks much in the way of deeper resonance. It is a considerably sharper entertainment than the first film, but little in it aspires to do more than entertain.

The story begins one year after the Pevensies--Peter (William Moseley), Susan (Anna Popplewell), Edmund (Skandar Keynes), and Lucy (Georgie Henley)--returned from Narnia, where they had established themselves as legendary kings and queens, to humdrum lives as everyday teens in mid-century London. They are coping with the demotion as best they can, though Peter, the eldest, is not coping well: He has lost his throne but not his sense of entitlement, as frequent fisticuffs over perceived slights attest. That all changes one day on the subway platform, when walls, tracks, and trains are abruptly whooshed away and the Pevensies are dumped unceremoniously on a sunlit beach. Someone has summoned them back to Narnia.

That someone is young Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes), though it will be a while before they meet him. In the meantime, they discover that during their twelve-month absence Narnia has aged 1,300 years, and it has not aged well. Foreign invaders, the Telmarines, have subjugated the land and all but rid it of its mythical menagerie of centaurs, dwarves, and talking varmints. The trees no longer dance and the animals have mostly gone feral. Worse still, a cruel usurper, Miraz (Sergio Castellitto), has stolen the Telmarine throne from Caspian, the rightful heir, and driven the prince into hiding, necessitating the emergency magic-horn call that brought the Pevensies back to Narnia. With the help of a cranky dwarf--as if there were any other kind--named Trumpkin (Peter Dinklage), the kids eventually unite with Caspian, and together they assemble a motley band of fairy-tale creatures to take on the Telmarine army.
The evolution from The Lion, the Witch to Prince Caspian is to some degree one of quest story to war story, and it mirrors the shift between the first and second of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films. The pleasures are more emphatic but also rowdier, as battle gives way to battle, siege to counter-siege. Happily, director Andrew Adamson, working from a script he co-wrote with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, has taken real strides since his earlier outing. The dialogue is crisper, the sets and staging more spectacular, the pace more lively (despite one or two plot twists too many), and the action sequences far more riveting. It may still lack the narrative depth and complexity of Jackson's Tolkien films, but those are difficult qualities to conjure in a film whose cast is made up almost entirely of teenagers and talking animals.

Moreover, while this film is darker and more violent than the first, it is also far funnier, with Dinklage dropping his voice an octave to bring new life (and a healthy injection of irony) to his grumpy stereotype. The young actors playing the Pevensies have all grown more fully into themselves as well, and as a result don't seem quite so ridiculous as mythic heroes. Moseley's Peter, in particular, has crossed the threshold from mostly-boy to almost-man, a development the film puts to good use in a well-staged duel with the vicious Miraz. Castellitto is exceptionally good in that latter role, and his fellow Telmarines are played by a strong multinational troupe who manage not to crack themselves up while sneering in Spanish accents through a variety of villainous moustaches and goatees. As the dashing Caspian, British stage actor Ben Barnes has ensured that his visage will adorn the locker doors of many a junior-high girl (though one hopes without the feathered, late-70s-pop-star coiffe he sports here). And Tilda Swinton and Liam Neeson return for limited, but important, cameos as the White Witch and the voice of the lion Aslan, respectively.
Prince Caspian is a less introspective film than its predecessor: World War II and the fatherlessness of the Pevensies are mentioned only elliptically, and there are no emotional wounds as deep as the petulant rage of the forgotten middle child displayed by Edmund. (Indeed, the most significant interpersonal quarrel of the film is a tiresome competition between Peter and Caspian for the title of Most Impetuous Boy Hero.) Still, this is not a film without moral texture. Challenges are met, but also failed, and the consequences of the latter are not glossed. And while Christian allegory--about perseverance in the face of doubt, the perils of temptation, faith in the unseen--again hangs over the proceedings, it does so more lightly than in the previous film's leonine crucifixion. The final act is more satisfying, too, striking an elegiac note of opportunities past, friends departed, dreams outgrown. Prince Caspian may be less full of innocent wonder than its predecessor, but it is a smarter, better film. Like its young stars, the Narnia franchise has, for better and worse, grown up.

Iron Man (2008)™
‘Iron Man’ has several advantages over a lot of recent efforts in the superhero genre. It features a solid cast, snappy dialogue, some pleasant surprises, expectedly impressive special effects and even a hint of subtle social commentary. But most importantly, it’s fun.
Director Jon Favreau (“Elf,” “Zathura”) makes some quirky but intriguing choices that keep the film from being stale or rote. The most notable of these is casting Robert Downey, Jr. in the title role.
As Tony Stark, the weapons tycoon who puts on a high-tech suit of armor to take on bad guys, Downey manages to find dozens of intriguing nuances that manage to make the altar ego just as if not more entertaining than the superhero himself.
Stark’s prodigious engineering skills have enabled him to expand on the wealth he has inherited for his father. His company is a top supplier to the Pentagon, which gives Tony the resources to spend obscenely high amounts on wine, women and Jackson Pollack paintings.

His careless lifestyle concerns his friend Colonel Jim Rhodes (Terrence Howard) and his assistant Virginia “Pepper” Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), who worry that he might just party himself to death.
Stark is forced to radically examine his life when after demonstrating his newest missile, he’s captured by Afghan terrorists and forced to make them an exact copy of the new weapon. Teaming up with a local doctor (Shaun Toub, “The Kite Runner”) who’s also being held captive, he instead builds a suit that enables him to take on multiple opponents.

Stark returns home appalled that his weapons had been sold to terrorists as freely as they were sold to the U.S. military. But his stockholders and his second-in-command Obadiah Stone (Jeff Bridges) may take the company from him before he can put a stop to the atrocities.
Downey’s acerbic delivery makes Tony as entertaining as he is self-absorbed. When Pepper discovered Tony removing the Iron Man armor she knows nothing about, Downey blithely tells her, “Let’s be honest. This isn’t the worst thing you’ve caught me doing.”
Downey is also able to play the reformed Tony without slipping into caricature. Because Tony Stark is so convincingly human, it’s much easier to cheer for him and to want him to beat bad guys senseless.

What’s most remarkable about “Iron Man” is that viewers actually have to wait a bit before Stark dons his metallic armor. The fact that the wait isn’t a burden can be directly attributed to Downey. He can effortlessly elicit laughter or empathy, almost at will.
The able supporting players certainly don’t hurt. Howard makes an able sidekick, who gets to do more than simply admire Stark’s lethal toys, and Bridges is wonderfully cold and conscienceless as Stone.
Oscar-winner Paltrow would seem to be overqualified to play Stark’s girl-Friday, but screenwriters Mark Fergus, Hawk Osby, Art Marcum and Matt Holloway thankfully give her substantial tasks instead of simply serving as a damsel-in-distress.

The screenwriters also make room for trail and error. Much of the joy of the film comes from Stark trying to fix the deficiencies in his new suit while he’s on missions. Apparently, evil isn’t taking any breaks.
When the action does come, Favreau, who demonstrated a genuine flair for special effects in “Zathura,” deftly keeps it from looking silly or cartoonish. With Downey providing the wisecracks and the attitude, Favreau’s straightforward approach proves a perfect counterpoint. Favreau also has the good sense to know that impressive hardware can get boring quickly if the people using it aren’t interesting.
As with a lot of the heroes Marvel Comics giant Stan Lee has created or co-created (yes, he makes yet another funny cameo here), Tony Stark’s is intriguing because his impressive abilities are matched with real-world neuroses. Like Lee, Favreau knows that great visuals are to be treasured, but good characters and stories can make those images more compelling than they would be alone.

The screenwriters also make room for trail and error. Much of the joy of the film comes from Stark trying to fix the deficiencies in his new suit while he’s on missions. Apparently, evil isn’t taking any breaks.
When the action does come, Favreau, who demonstrated a genuine flair for special effects in “Zathura,” deftly keeps it from looking silly or cartoonish. With Downey providing the wisecracks and the attitude, Favreau’s straightforward approach proves a perfect counterpoint. Favreau also has the good sense to know that impressive hardware can get boring quickly if the people using it aren’t interesting.
As with a lot of the heroes Marvel Comics giant Stan Lee has created or co-created (yes, he makes yet another funny cameo here), Tony Stark’s is intriguing because his impressive abilities are matched with real-world neuroses. Like Lee, Favreau knows that great visuals are to be treasured, but good characters and stories can make those images more compelling than they would be alone.
